Does MTCPA really oppose "insert issue here"?

January 07, 2025

Short Answer: No, MTCPA does not oppose specific policies or funding decisions made by the state government, such as housing initiatives, adoption, or renewable energy efforts. Our concern lies with the mechanism used to fund these efforts—specifically, the use of tax credits.

In 2021, Montana implemented tax simplification, effective January 1, 2024, a significant milestone and long-term goal of the Society. To preserve this progress, we oppose adding tax credits or measures that would unnecessarily complicate the tax code.

Later this week, we will oppose House Bill 21, which seeks to establish a Montana workforce housing tax credit. While we support initiatives to improve housing, we recommend alternative funding solutions that do not involve tax credits. Our opposition includes thoughtful suggestions to achieve the intended goals without reintroducing tax code complexities.
