5 Ways to Ease Burdens to CPA Licensure

September 11, 2024

The Montana Society of CPAs (MTCPA) is dedicated to ensuring the future of the CPA profession by supporting aspiring CPAs. The journey to becoming a CPA can be daunting, but we can all play a part in easing the burden for those taking this path. Here are five practical ways to help:

1. Offer Study Time

One of the biggest challenges for CPA candidates is balancing work and study. As an employer or mentor, consider offering candidates designated study time. Whether it’s a few hours a week or flexible working arrangements during exam periods, this gesture can help reduce stress and allow them to focus on their studies without sacrificing their job responsibilities.

2. Provide Financial Assistance

The costs associated with CPA licensure can add up quickly. Exam fees, review courses, and study materials can be a significant financial burden. Employers or mentors can help by covering some of these costs, or even by offering scholarships. The MTCPA Legacy Foundation also offers scholarships to Montana students pursuing the CPA path. Supporting candidates financially not only helps them but also encourages long-term professional growth within your organization.

3. Mentorship

The CPA journey can feel overwhelming, especially for those new to the profession. Offering mentorship is one of the most impactful ways to support CPA candidates. Experienced CPAs can provide guidance on the licensure process, share study tips, and offer moral support. MTCPA’s MT Roots platform is a great resource for connecting candidates with seasoned professionals across Montana. A strong mentorship connection can make a world of difference for candidates navigating the challenges of licensure.

4. Celebrate Milestones

Earning CPA licensure is a significant achievement, and recognizing candidates’ milestones can motivate them to keep going. Whether it’s passing an exam section or completing a crucial step in the process, celebrating these achievements encourages candidates to stay on track. Acknowledging their hard work, whether through recognition in meetings or small celebrations, fosters a supportive environment that values their efforts.

5. Advocate for Future CPAs

Be an advocate for CPA candidates by promoting licensure within your organization. Encourage them to pursue the CPA designation by sharing resources, like with MTCPA’s Student Membership. Student members have access to specialized communications, free attendance at our Annual Conference, discounts on CPA Exam review materials, plus scholarship opportunities at Montana universities

You can also advocate at the state level by supporting legislation that makes the licensure process more accessible. By reducing these barriers, we help build a stronger CPA pipeline in Montana. Whether it’s offering study time, financial support, or mentorship, these small efforts can have a significant impact on the next generation of CPAs.
